Brak furniture is a local, Joburg based, furniture design and manufacturing company. Owned by father and son team, Wolfgang (Snr) and Wolfgang (Jnr) Muller, all the pieces are designed and hand-manufactured by them in their workshop.
Wolfgang Snr, who grew up in Switzerland and moved to Johannesburg after he finished his apprenticeship, has been making furniture, shop-fitting and custom-building kitchens for over 40 years. Wolfgang Jnr, a South African is the designer of the team. inspired by 70's Africana Retro and mid-century modern design, they like to give the pieces a fun and playful twist with Brak's signature bold combination of colours and wood.
Why we're pretty Cool:
We're a family business. Wolf Jnr designs it. Wolf Snr builds it. My mother Ester does final inspection on all out-going items and has a pretty bad-ass sales pitch and a winning smile.
You'll always reach either Wolf Jnr or Snr directly. We don't have any sales people. You deal with either of us from the beginning right until the end, when you item is in your space gleaming in all of its glory.
We do custom sizes. We can redesign and make any item fit anywhere in your house. We're not set on standard sizes. That sounds boring anyway.
We're open-minded towards helping you build those designs you had for that DIY project you wanted to build but never found the time too. Bascially, we want to make your (old) New Years resolutions come true. Nice hey?
We've got range. We offer you different finishing options for a unit that comes in at different prices. We also build state-of-the-art and polished work for interior designers and high-end customers too. Bonus.
The Story Behind Brak:
Brak was started by Wolf Jnr and his girlfriend Zoe Laband in 2010 as a passion project, while balancing it with their 'real jobs'. Needing furniture for a new flat, and having a very limited budget, they began to up-cycle retro Africana pieces that they picked up in junk stores. It proved to be so much fun that they continued to find pieces and up-cycle them, and soon they had accumulated so many pieces that they opened up a stall at Market on Main in Maboneng for several years.
As demand grew, they joined forces with Wolf's dad - an expert and experienced Swiss craftman - to start designing and manufacturing their own pieces. Wolfgang Snr did a woodwork apprenticeship in the late 60's in Switzerland. By the way, a totally cool fact, Wolf Jnr's great-grandfather, Walter Muller, was a furniture designer himself and had a large influence on many of the more typical 60's designs we know today.
Anyway, sadly Wolf and Zoe split up. Don't worry it was mutual, and they're still friends till this day.
Since then Wolf jnr and snr have taken Brak to the next level. Its a true family business that combines the energy and ideas of youth with the skill and expertise of experience.
